Fading

The works within the project “fading” are the result of a personal exploration of visual memory. You can have a strong memory of landscapes just because of the weather, falling light an object in the landscape or because it is connected to another memory. In the latter case, the visual memory is intertwined with the emotional memory of a wonderful trip, a poem, a conversation with a friend about/on that place, for example.

Memories usually fade or at least fade into the background of your mind. But sometimes parts of that memory can rekindle and you can revisit a place in your mind. It is interesting to “see” what remains of the original image.

On a completely different level, we can have shared memories when two or more people were in the same place at the same time. But how can we ever know what each of us visually remembers and thus sees in our memories? And to abstract this even more, what if we let go of the landscape and think of memories of events we have and experienced in a different way.

I work with these thoughts in the graphic studio, where I make intaglio prints of landscapes and ancient columns. In the printing process, I frequently “just react” to what is happening. In many cases, I continue to work on the prints with other drawing materials, making these prints unique.
